“Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is morning to be good on?”
“All of them at once, and a very fine morning for a pipe of tobacco out of doors, into the bargain. If you have a pipe about you, sit down and have a fill of mine! There’s no hurry, we have all the day before us!”
That I felt this daybreak when I looked outside and saw the beautiful winter’s morning, with the sun shining and the world beginning to return to life.
“This is the first morning since the return of the sun, and it couldn’t get more perfect!” I thought to myself as I filled my pipe to have a smoke before breakfast.
Now, if you’ve been following my posts, then you are aware that I’m neither a Cavendish fan nor an aromatic fan, so why on Middle Earth would I like Hobbit’s weed so much?!
Hobbit’s weed is a fire cured mix of golden and black Cavendish, cased with a light cherry and vanilla topping, and has been made that way since its debut in 1973. Hobbit’s weed just celebrated its 40th birthday, and remains one of the most popular blends in the world. So popular in fact, that is hard to get your hands on. When I bought mine, Tewksbury went from 1500 ounces to 500 ounces in one day, less than even.
So why would I like it so much? Well, the answer to that lies in the reasons behind the popularity of the tobacco. Tewksbury makes an incredible product, it is just that simple.
The bag note is simply unbelievable! The rich fruity smell of the cherries, combined with a vanilla makes you think of fruit pies, and happy moments on the front porch with a long churchwarden in hand.
The tobacco is neither too moist nor too dry, and packs a pipe, whether Briar, Cob, or wood, with effortlessness.
Being none too moist, the tobacco lights easily, and remains lit with little need for relighting, and the room note, like the bag note, fills the air with cheery smoke scented of cherries and vanilla, and has to be the most pleasant room note that I’ve ever smelled a tobacco.
Unfortunately, like almost all aromatics, Hobbit’s weed leaves a wet plug of dottle in the bottom of your pipe that must be emptied out when the bowl is done.
Being a Cavendish, the tobacco has almost no bite to it, and you can enjoy a full bowl with almost no tongue bite, provided that you don’t puff too hard. Also the tobacco is mild to medium strength, so a full bowl does not leave you feeling buzzed.
Overall, I highly recommend this tobacco, if not for an everyday smoke, then definitely for one that you would keep for special occasions. Pair it was a sweet drink, such as an apricot or cherry brandy, or sweet cup of tea, or rich creamy sweet coffee.
Tewksbury and Company delivers anywhere in the United States, though I am unsure about international shipping. On the other hand, there are a lot of American pipe smokers that would probably be more than willing to help you get your hands on some, myself included.
Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em!
