I would like to begin by thanking for graciously sending these CAO MX2 cigars in for review. If you would like to know more about Cigar City you can visit their website and follow them on their social media outlets (information in addendum).

I wanted to get a more objective perspective of this cigar since it is one stick that has a wide variety of reviews (including Sable’s), ranging from very poor to very high, thus I smoked a few of them so that I could make sure that the flavours, burn time and transitions remained relatively consistent. I took each stick out of its cellophane and was met by a very oily and dark maduro wrapper. The give was slightly spongy from top to bottom and the cigar gave off notes of bitter chocolate and wood.

I snipped off the top cap with my guillotine and toasted the foot with my single flame butane torch. The initial notes were slightly puzzling, it was highly complex and difficult to distinguish the flavours, however, after a few draws I was easily able to pick out notes of dried wood and earth. The draw on all of the sticks that I tried were a little too snug for my taste as was the lack of smoke volume, however flavours somehow were able to get through nonetheless.

First Third (1/3) – 20 minutes

The flavours didn’t really change much from the initial light but there was a noticeable addition of a coffee note, however that quickly faded from the finish. The cigar had a distinctive texture characteristic; unlike many other maduros I smoke that give an oily or meaty texture in the mouth this cigar really gave the feeling of dryness. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but you do get the craving for water.

Second Third (2/3) – 15 minutes

Certainly the least favourable part of the stick, there was a dramatic decrease in complexity and all of the taste was made up of a smokey flavour. Other then that, along with the poor draw and smoke volume this was a lacklustre third.

Final Third (3/3) – 15 minutes

The stick picked up at this point and I was getting some distinctive CAO flavours that the MX2 promised to give. Notes of coffee and hazelnut were present on the finish and as they faded they made way for a general sweet note. The only problem was that these otherwise delicious flavours were not complimented well with the dry mouth texture.

Total Smoke Time: 50 min

The Verdict

The CAO MX2 promises more than it delivers. The few promising flavours that it produces are overwhelmed by a intense dryness which diminished the notes. Taking this into account along with the poor draw and lack of smoke volume the CAO MX2 earns on the Leather Library 10-Point Stogie Scale a:
