An Aromatic That I Can Get Behind (Cornell & Diehl Cellar Series Old Grove)

003-016-0211So, my package from arrived yesterday and in it were three tins of Cornell & Diehl Old Grove from their brand new Cellar series.

Being a series that is being promoted this month, I was eager to get my hands on this and their Bourbon Bleu in time for you to order it while the promotion is still going on.Smoking-Pipe-icon

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect but I eagerly read the tin to get a glimpse of what’s in store.

Sitting between City Park Avenue and Bayou Metairie lies the Old Grove, home to ancient, moss-covered oaks and many more of New Orleans’ oldest trees.  Worthy of any cellar, this complex, ribbon-cut mixture combines bright and red Virginias, dark Burley, Katerini Turkish, black Cavendish, and granulated Perique together with a subtle pomegranate topping to create a blend that will age as gracefully as the old grove itself.

Pomegranate?  My head has a little trouble wrapping itself around that one, but sure, why not?

And then there’s the hook of the Cellar Series; these tobaccos are, supposedly, designed to age in your cellar for as much as 10 to 15 years.

Well, I’m not about to wait 10 to 15 years, so I pulled the tab to be greeted with a somewhat subtle, pleasant, wine-like fruity aroma that is obviously the topping on this tobacco.

The circular paper shield that they use to cover the tobacco is slightly damp from the tobacco underneath, but the tobacco itself is ready to load after only about 5 minutes of airing time.

Lighting up, I meet with a delicious, complex, robust smoke that is delicately flavored by the smooth, sweet, plummy pomegranate topping; nothing too powerful, just enough to kick it up a little bit.

And my roommate, who doesn’t smoke, tells me that the room note is light and pleasant and almost imperceptible.

The bowl takes about ½ hour to smoke, but I find myself reloading the pipe for another one and soon afterward.  Not because the tobacco isn’t strong enough, which it is, but rather because the tobacco is just that good that it makes you want another bowl.

So, just as I’m about to write this review, in walks my hubby, and we end up talking for 2 hours, while I smoked two more bowls.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I really enjoyed this tobacco.  I’m not normally one for aromatics, but this one is subtle enough that I can get behind it and the tobacco is strong enough that you don’t feel like you’re smoking air.

Get it at for $9.12 USD.

Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em!
