Soliciting Your Opinion

Hey Community

I need some advice so I am reaching out to the greater tobacco using community (most of my readers have historically been Cigar and Pipe smokers, but I am also reaching out to Snuff/Snus users and Hookah smokers (tobacco shisha only)).

<GET ON WI’ IT!> shouted from the back of the room

Ok, here goes.  We are already almost half way to the first goal, which is to fund the Website so that there is a Free area and a Members only area.  If I reach that goal (which seems likely), I will need to begin construction of the Members only area of the .com.  So, my question to the community is, aside from a forum, what would you like to see in your members area of the magazine?  What sort of articles should be reserved?  Should Tobacco University (which will be expanded) (don’t know what that is? Look on your site navigation bar.), be members only?

I welcome all opinions in the comments on Fb or here on the site, even if you doubt you will buy a membership, because what the member perks are might sway someone else, and we can really use the help to keep this going.

Thanks for reading,

  1. I’m very excited about the potential relaunch of the magazine, and I’m sure looking forward to doing reviews again! This is great news!

I think having Members Only and Public content is a good idea, because subscriptions will make the magazine sustainable. I know from my inside perspective that a lot of the problem was getting reviewers to turn out regular reviews. By paying reviewers, even a small amount, we’re far more likely to be able to get people to provide regular content.

I don’t think Tobacco University should be part of the Members Only content though. In my opinion, the whole point of Tobacco University is to help the novice (and sometimes the slightly more experienced) aficionado learn about how to appreciate pipes and cigars, and what you call things, and so forth. I think TU content should be public by definition.

But that’s me! As always, I’m happy to hear opinions from others in the community.

    And that’s a Lady’s Perspective! 😉

  2. Have you worked any with Jorge Armenteros? https://tobacconistuniversity.org/ Co-sponsor/co branded stuff would be good.

  3. I think a members area is a good idea too. I’d suggest having two levels of ‘university’. All the basics, how to pack and light a pipe, cut and toast a cigar, definitions of different kinds of tobacco for pipes and cigars, should be open to anyone. Once you get into more advanced or specific things, how to make your own hobbit weed, refurbish an estate pipe, infuse a cigar at home, could be members only.
Building on an above comment, if you’re going to pay a minimal price for reviews maybe they should be in the members only area so you have some money to pay them.
I’d definitely like threads (pipes, cigars, tobaccos) in the member forum for reviews by members.

    • I think these are all excellent ideas. I think Erin’s intention was to pick some of the reviews etc. to be designated “public content,” kind of like an Editor’s Pick idea. So some would be free, and some would not be. If you want them all, you gotta sign up!

Also like your two levels of Tobacco University idea. I think we could make that work!

We may be changing our forum platform: the existing forum was set up by Steven, and if he doesn’t still have the info on how to edit it, we’ll need a new platform, just FYI. But having a section for reviews from members is an excellent plan. I would love to compare my opinions with those of our readers for sure! And yes, the forum will be Members-Only.

      Thanks for some good ideas!
